Bequia is of volcanic origin, as are all of the Grenadines. Only six square miles, its hills run from an elevation of over 800 feet down to fertile valleys at sea level. Although not a tropical rain forest, its foliage grows lushly most of the year.
Yachts from all over the world come to Admiralty Bay, considered one of the safest harbours in the Grenadines. Port Elizabeth is the main town, located at the harbour, with a main street which extends several blocks. You will find a variety of shops, banks, grocery stores, bars and restaurants.
Bequia is a charming, small, old fashioned Caribbean island. Many Caribbean nationals come to Bequia to regain a sense of the Caribbean as it used to be. Having said that, it is also an island with a variety of restaurants, several dive shops, and a healthy foreign community. You can buy baguettes, pizza and hamburgers, but you can also buy roti, callaloo, and goat. There are no high-rises, no golf courses, no chrome or glitter. They still build boats by hand, and tend to gardens. There are a number of great beaches, "jump ups" (dances), snorkelling, and great hiking. Day trips to other islands on our 50 foot luxury cruiser (FlyBYNight) or our fast 30ft speed boat, are easily arranged.
Coming to Bequia is more like an adventure than just a vacation. It is the island one dreams of finding, with its lovely beaches, rolling hills, beautiful flowers, and friendly people. The weather is great, averaging in the 80's all year.
“The undisturbed beaches, rugged mountain terrain, lush forests, and blue sailing waters draw in tourists who visit St. Vincent. Bequia, Petit, and Young islands are among the more popular spots for millionaires and others looking for a unique hideaway. Bequia has the most tranquil beaches while Petit is known for its private resort and cottages.” (Forbes FYI, 2003). |
